CAPE FEAR CHAPTER #3 NEWSLETTER
Volume 4 Number 10
June 1, 2008
Where oh where has this year gone? Here it is June and the end of regular meetings until September. Saturday, June 7th is our luncheon at Elijah’s in Chandler’s Warf. This is a great time to recap our year and express appreciation to in-coming and out-going officers. If you haven’t made reservations—time’s a’wasting!!!! You don’t want to miss this one.
Pat Gasson, Yvonne Brown, Pat Bolander, Judy Ward and Lee Ann Moore represented us proudly May 10 at the commemoration in Whiteville. Pat Bolander, State Recorder of Military Crosses was presented a flag during the ceremony. The entrance to the ceremony was an awesome sight, lined with the different Confederate flags. Judy and Yvonne portrayed mourning ladies.
The sun came out and shined brightly May 11th for the Confederate Memorial Service at Oakdale Cemetery. Cliff Williams was honored, and most deservedly so, with the Stonewall Jackson Award. Cliff works tirelessly with the SCV, Oakdale Cemetery and other projects to preserve our Confederate heritage. Willie James and his group presented the flags and volley. Paschal Barrett gave the roll of honor. Judy Ward and Martha Watson were mourning ladies for this ceremony.
Judy Ward, Martha and Donald Watson, and Yvonne Brown made history come alive at the Bellamy Mansion and River Walk on May 24th. Judy was quite authentic with her narrative excerpts from Women of the South in War Times explaining how women with families and widows traveled with units as refugees for protection. She also told how Col. John Taylor, a prosperous relative of the Bellamy family left Wilmington, returning to find his property confiscated. The program was very well received and enjoyed by many visitors from all over the state. My thanks to Judy for helping me keep up with these events. She is my roving reporter, and a fine one at that.
Our Jefferson Davis luncheon will be Saturday, June 7th @ noon at Elijah’s Restaurant. Cost is $15.00 each (this includes meal, coffee or tea, & gratuities). You may choose from 4 entrees and 2 desserts. Send your check to Cape Fear Chapter #3 UDC c/o Elizabeth Stanfield-Maddox, 2910 Park Avenue, Wilmington, NC 28403. Elizabeth is graciously handling this duty for Jean Loughlin as she continues to recover from surgery. Invite family and friends as they are most welcomed. Reservations are required so don’t delay making yours. If you haven’t done so….time is short, make them today.
June 21 is open house at the UDC House in Raleigh. We have been specially requested to participate in this. Renovations are complete, the silver will be displayed and all are urged to come. Hopefully this will encourage membership and give everyone an idea what we are all about. As we will be featured in two rooms this is the ideal time to wear our patriotic aprons. Yvonne has extras and sewing days are planned prior to the event.
Don’t forget sewing days at Sara Cochrane’s home, 9:30 a.m. on Thursdays June 5th, 12th and 19th. Sara has plenty of thread. Bring whatever sewing supplies you might want. If you can’t sew we can use you to cut cloth or pin patterns. Ya’ll want to have them to show off at the open house in Raleigh on the 21st.
Kitsey Lackey reports that recently books on the War Between the States were available half price at the City Market downtown. Sounds like a good reason to trek downtown, enjoy the river front and pick up some fresh fruits and veggies at the same time. Good hunting!
Genny Murphy, our Chapter Webmaster asks that anyone with photos to share send them to her at Murfgm@aol.com. She will post them on our website; a great way to share activities for those unable to attend them. The website is www.capefearudc3.com. Check it out.
Do ya’ll realize we have over 100 members on our roster? Think about the last meeting, luncheon, ceremony or event you attended. Did you see the same few familiar faces over and over and wonder where the other ladies are? Next time there is a get-together, call someone you haven’t seen for a spell, invite her to join you, heck fire, call her for no good reason, see how she is, tell her you miss her and invite her back. Sometimes all it takes is a little encouragement, a little nudge to get someone to take that step they’ve been meanin’ to do anyway. Maybe they need a ride or just don’t feel like going alone. We’ve all been there. Go on, call that fellow UDC member, friend, neighbor or relative. Our strength and our future is in our numbers ladies. Let’s not just keep our chapter alive, let’s make it grow and thrive!
Under the weather? Feelin’ puny: Genny Murphy reports her mother, Mrs. Florence is feeling better. Glad to hear it and hope to see you at more activities, we miss you Mrs. Florence!
