CONFEDERATE MEMORIAL DAY SERVICE
Cape Fear Chapter 3, United Daughters of the Confederacy, held their annual Confederate Memorial Service at Oakdale Cemetery on Sunday, May 2, 2010 at 3:00 P.M. George Davis Camp 5, Sons of Confederate Veterans were also in attendance and contributed to the success of this annual event. Notable guests included UDC NC Division President Mrs. Emily Champion, and Sons of Confederate Veterans Southeast Brigade Commander, Alan Hilburn, Sr. Chapter President, Mrs. Charlotte Kelly opened the service with welcoming remarks, and the invocation was given by Mrs. Barbara Murphy. The pledges to the flag were led by Commander Timothy Stewart of George Davis Camp 5, Sons of Confederate Veterans. The songs were led by Mrs. Holly Beasley. Remarks were given by Mr. Eric Kozen, Superintendent of Oakdale Cemetery, Mr. Timothy Stewart of George Davis Camp 5, SCV, Mrs. Emily Champion, President, North Carolina Division UDC, and Mrs. Patricia Bolander, District VII Director, UDC. The speaker was Colonel Black Jack Travis, author and re-enactor, who spoke about the pride of the Confederate Soldier. Mrs. Norma Grabenstein read a poem entitled: Stone Soldier. Mr. Paschall Barrett read the Roll Call of Honor, while the Cape Fear Chapter 3 mourning ladies ( Mrs. Yvonne Brown, Ms. Judy Ward, Mrs. Patricia Gasson, and Martha Eason Watson) laid flowers at the base of the Confederate Monument, escorted by Donald Watson of SCV George Davis Camp 5. Wreaths were laid by President Charlotte Kelly of Cape Fear Chapter 3, President Patricia Bolander, Fort Fisher Chapter 2325, President Millie Elledge, Blockade Runner Chapter 2428, Commander Timothy Stewart, George Davis Camp 5, and SCV, and Mr. Jim Steele, site manager of the Fort Fisher Historic Site. The volley salute was given by the Confederate States Marines, and TAPS was played by Mr. Bob Norem. The benediction was given by Rev. Ottis King, Chaplain, and SCV George Davis Camp 5. Following the memorial service, Cape Fear Chapter 3, United Daughters of the Confederacy provided refreshments of cookies and lemonade, with special thanks to Claudia Evans.
WHITEVILLE HOLDS CONFEDERATE MEMORIAL SERVICE
The Sons of Confederate Veterans “Columbus County Volunteers, Camp 794, conducted their annual Confederate Memorial Service on Saturday, May 8, 2010 in Whiteville. The annual ceremony began at 10:00 A.M. with the annual raising of the Confederate Battle Flag over the Columbus County Courthouse. Members of Company K, 20th North Carolina Troops, along with the mourning ladies of Cape Fear Chapter 3, United Daughters of the Confederacy, including, Yvonne Brown, Judy Ward, Pat Gasson, and Martha Watson, accompanied by George Davis Camp 5 member, Donald Watson, paraded to the front of the courthouse, as two members of the 20th North Carolina raised the flag, followed by a musket salute that reverberated around the downtown area. The ceremony then moved to the Whiteville Cemetery, where the entrance road was lined by dozens of Confederate flags blowing in the strong breeze. Commander Jolly of SCV Camp 794, Columbus County Volunteers, opened the Memorial Service. Todd Collins, of Company K, 20th North Carolina read the names of the known Confederate Soldiers buried in the Whiteville Cemetery, as the Cape Fear Chapter 3 mourning ladies laid flowers at the base of the Confederate monument, and other Confederate graves. Todd Collins then asked all in attendance to step forward, and honor their Confederate ancestor by announcing the name of their ancestor and unit information to the audience. Greetings were given by UDC Cape Fear Chapter 3 Vice President Patricia Gasson and UDC Fort Fisher Chapter 2325 President, Mrs. Patricia Gray Bolander. The featured speaker was Mr. H. K. Edgerton (R) who is a lively and entertaining gentleman from Asheville, North Carolina, who started off his portion of the ceremony by calling up all the soldiers and mourning ladies to sing a rousing rendition of “Dixie.” The service was closed with a benediction by Rev. Russell Long, Chaplain, NC SCV.
FORT FISHER MEMORIAL SERVICE
The United Daughters of the Confederacy North Carolina Division Fort Fisher Committee held their annual Confederate Memorial Day Service at Battle Acre on Saturday, May 8, 2010 at 4:00 A.M. Mrs. Kaye Lavin, chairman of the Fort Fisher Committee, and a member of UDC Fort Fisher Chapter 2325 welcomed those in attendance. Committee member and UDC Cape Fear Chapter 3 member, Martha Eason Watson, gave the invocation. Committee member, and UDC Blockade Runner Chapter 2428 President Ms. Millie Elledge, led the pledges to the flags. Local author, and professional re-enactor, Colonel Black Jack Travis spoke at the Memorial Service on the “The Rascals of Fort Fisher.” Wreaths were laid by Patricia G. Bolander of UDC Fort Fisher Chapter 2325, Millie Elledge of UDC Blockade Runner Chapter 2428, Martha Eason Watson of UDC Cape Fear Chapter 3, Mr. Pete D’ Onofrio of the Friends of Fort Fisher, and Jeff Melton of the SCV McRae Camp # 2063. The mourning ladies of UDC Cape Fear Chapter 3 (Judy Ward, Yvonne Brown, Patricia Gasson, and Martha Watson) laid flowers at the base of the Confederate Monument. Commander Timothy B. Stewart of George Davis Camp 5 played “TAPS.” Closing remarks were given by Kaye Lavin, and the Benediction was given by Patricia Bolander.
SWEDISH EXCHANGE STUDENTS LEARN ABOUT LOCAL HISTORY
High School students from Sweden visited the Wilmington area during the Azalea Festival, and were treated to a history lesson on the War Between the States by members of Cape Fear Chapter 3 at Lebanon Chapel, located on the grounds of Airlie Gardens on April 5, 2010. Chapter President Charlotte Kelly, Yvonne Brown, Patricia Gasson, Martha Eason Watson, and the coordinator for this special event, Kitsy Lackey talked to the students. Claudia Evans set up a table, and served refreshments following the talk and Linda Snider took pictures. Donald Watson of the SCV George Davis Camp 5, was in attendance, and was dressed in civilian attire. The students learned about period music, blockade runners, Confederate spy Rose O’Neal Greenhow, clothing, mourning customs, and Fort Fisher. They learned about “goober peas” and Confederate money. The students presented the UDC members with 2 special gifts; a hand carved wooden horse called a dalecarlian horse, and a pin of a United States flag and a Swedish flag joined together. The students were visiting eastern North Carolina for a week during spring break. They were introduced to Pepsi on their first night in Wilmington. They also planned to shop at Independence Mall for prom dresses for their upcoming prom, and they Special thanks go to Kitsy Lackey, who coordinated this event with their teacher for weeks prior to the students’ visit to the Wilmington area.
NORTH CAROLINA C OF C CONVENTION HELD IN WILMINGTON
Months of preparation and hard work came together on April 16 and 17, 2010, when the C of C George Davis Camp 6 and UDC Cape Fear Chapter 3, hosted the annual North Carolina Division Children of the Confederacy Convention in Wilmington at the Hampton Inn Medical Park. Cape Fear Chapter 3 President Charlotte Kelly, and Third Vice President, Ellen Money, put a committee together, who worked many hours preparing name tags, special souvenirs, programs, and gift bags for attendees. Attendees participated in a Memorial Service to honor their ancestors, and visited the Cape Fear Museum to learn about the Wilmington area. Special guests included Michelle Miller, North Carolina Division UDC Third Vice President, Emily Champion, North Carolina Division UDC President, and C of C General Vice President, A. J. Widowski. Cape Fear Chapter 3 members who donated items, money, or time to make this convention a success are: Claudia Evans, Jean Loughlin, Juanita Dail, Kitsy Lackey, Yvonne Brown, Martha Eason Watson, and most importantly, Polly Sheats. Doris N. Thompson made the beautiful flower arrangement that decorated the head table.
JEFFERSON DAVIS BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION AND CHAPTER MEETING
THE JUNE CHAPTER MEETING WILL BE HELD ON SATURDAY, JUNE 12, 2010 AT 12:00 NOON AT HUGH MCRAE PARK IN WILMINGTON THIS WILL BE A PICNIC STYLE MEETING, SO PLEASE BRING YOUR FAVORITE COVERED DISHES TO THIS MEETING NEW CHAPTER OFFICERS WILL BE INSTALLED AT THIS MEETING. NORTH CAROLINA DIVISION PRESIDENT, MRS. EMILY CHAMPION WILL BE ON HAND FOR THIS SPECIAL MEETING. THE PROGRAM WILL BE ON: LEGEND AND LORE PERIOD MUSIC OF THE WBTS
